Blade Runner – A Special Event Featuring Sean Young, Sun June 12, 5PM
One of the best science fiction cult films of all time, Blade Runner, will be the latest offering from Westport Cinema Initiative. The showing will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, at Westport Town Hall, Myrtle Avenue, Westport, CT. There will be a talkback following the screening with Sean Young, one of the stars of the movie, and Susan Granger, our popular local film critic.
The 1982 film depicts the city of Los Angeles at a time in a terrifying future when genetically engineered “replicants” – visually indistinguishable from adult humans – are manufactured by the powerful Tyrell Corporation.
The use of “replicants” has been banned on Earth. So they are kept exclusively for dangerous or menial work on off-world colonies. “Replicants” who defy the ban and return to Earth are hunted down and killed by special police known as “Blade Runners”. The plot focuses on a group of them who are hiding in L.A. and the expert Blade Runner hunter, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who reluctantly agrees to chase them down.
In 1993, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Blade Runner is now regarded as one of the best science fiction films ever made.
